"The race goes not always to the swift but to those who keep running. You have powers you never dreamed of. You are capable of doing things you never thought possible. There are no limitations on what you can do."

In the world in which I live, I use my bicycle as part of a sport, but this year my goal with my Ironman World Championship on October 13th is to provide bicycles to people who can truly use them in their daily lives. My goal is to make my Ironman a celebration about the endless possibilities that can happen when people team together to make positive impacts. I’m asking you to join me in my mission. I know many of you share my passion for cycling and here is a grand chance for you to provide a bicycle to someone for empowerment, opportunity and sustainability. I ask you to consider the following scenario when you jump on your bike for your next leisure outing or training ride:

Every week, AIDS claims as many lives as American fatalities in the Vietnam War. One bicycle for a volunteer caregiver in Zambia costs only $109. Your gift of mobility can vastly improve the quality of life for adults, orphans, and vulnerable children living with HIV or AIDS in the most remote regions of Zambia. These life-changing tools can also make a world of a difference for the volunteer community caregivers trying to deliver health care to those who need it most. By donating mobility, you give the gift of hope to an entire community.

My goal for my Ironman World Championship is simple – one bicycle for every mile of my race: 140.6. For those of you within the cycling/triathlon community, I’d like to kindly remind you that most of us spend roughly the same on pedals as the cost of one of these life-changing bikes… please think about passing your love for our hobbies on to people who can use a bike as an important resource versus sport.

You have the power to move people forward. You have the power to give a bike.

Faith, Love, Freedom? Is this too much to ascribe to a simple machine on which we are both engine and fuel (as well as passenger and pilot)? Can there be so much that's so elemental in something most exquisitely designed to zoom down hills? The answer is right there, in your bike right now. Put a leg over one, and you can instantly see across that bridge from adult to child. There are about 1.1 billion bicycles making that trip right now. A billion people are pedaling with freedom and joy and innocence on the grandest, noblest toy in all the world.
